A Brief History of Drums

Drums have been around for a very long time. The first drums were natural and were made from animal hides stretched over a basket or a box. Those drums were typically found in tribal cultures, in countries in Africa and Australia.

In the 1800s, when the drum was introduced to music in America, the cloth was used instead of animal hide to create the drum head. In the 20th century, drummers began using metal drum heads because they produced a much louder sound.

What Types of Drums Are There?

Drums are categorized in three different ways. There are hand drums, which don’t require any drumsticks or mallets to play. Hand drums consist of the djembe, congas, bongos, and timbales. Floor toms are also a type of hand drum used in many different musical genres.

Another category is called “frame” drums or “kettledrums.” These drums include the snare drum, bass drum, tom-toms, and tympani. Frame drums can be either open or closed bottomed. The available bottomed frame drums sound more like finger cymbals than finger drums when finger bounce techniques are used. Fast frame drums have a more extensive sound range because they produce a louder noise when played with fingers or sticks.

The last category is called “mounted” instruments that are played using both hands and feet. The mounted percussion instruments include the xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, bells, vibraphone, marimba, timpani (kettle), gong-bells (chime). These instruments are made from metal bars that are struck by mallets or sticks to create sound.

Drum Basics 101

Drums can be played with a variety of techniques. There are two main ways to play the drums, the traditional way, and the matched grip method.

The conventional way requires using your fingers to strike the drum in different areas for different sounds. This technique is used when you want a lighter sound from the drum. The matched grip method requires placing your index finger on one side of the head to produce a more controlled sound.

There are many types of drums in today’s world. These drums can be grouped into membranophones, idiophones, and chordophones. Membranophones have a membrane stretched across a frame or shell and produce sound by vibrating that membrane when struck, such as timbales, bongos, djembes, congas, and tom-toms. Idiophones produce sound through vibration from being hit or scraped by sticks or other objects such as bells or triangles. Chordophones have strings struck with hammers to make a noise like a piano, or a harpsichord does. Drums fall under this category because they produce sound from being hit with hands or sticks rather than hitting strings with hammers.

How to play the tom-tom drums.

The tom-toms are the drums that will sound the lowest in pitch. They are played with drumsticks or fingers.

To play the tom-tom drums, you will want to be sure to straddle the drum, so your legs are on each side of it. Make a V shape with your index and middle finger when holding the drumstick. Wrap your thumb around your index and middle fingers for stability. To make a sound on a tom-tom, lightly tap it with the drumstick from about one inch above the surface of each drumhead.

Don’t forget to experiment with different grip styles and distances from the head!
